2022 Calera Jensen Vineyard Mt Harlan Pinot Noir

The fundamental belief in the Côte d’Or region of Burgundy is that limestone-rich soils create great Pinot Noir. Winemaker and founder Josh Jensen searched the diverse soils of California in search of this characteristic. In 1974, he identified a high elevation parcel south of San Francisco that was a former limestone quarry. It was called Mt. Harlan. In 1975, Josh planted three unique parcels of Pinot Noir on this site and released his first wines in 1975. It has been part of the Duckhorn Portfolio since 2017.

These vineyards are situated at an elevation above 2,000 feet with some vines exceeding 2,500 feet. This Pinot Noir was aged for 18 months in French Oak (30% new, 70% neutral) and fermented 100% whole cluster with indigenous yeasts.

As you quickly glimpse at the delicate ruby appearance of this wine you are drawn in by the enchanting potpourri of exotic spices and flowers. A bouquet of lilac and jasmine emerge in front with whispers of rustic spices, underbrush, rosemary and dried sage in the background. There is a complex range of fresh, candied red fruits and a raspberry liqueur-like texture with underpinnings of anise and minerals. There is ample concentration, yet within are layers of finesse and elegance that make for a very pleasurable experience.
