2022 Calera Ryan Vineyard Mt Harlan Pinot Noir
Calera remains one of California’s defining Pinot Noir estates, built on Josh Jensen’s belief that great Pinot needed limestone, elevation and tension, not just California sunshine. High in the remote Mt. Harlan AVA, the estate has long occupied its own lane: Burgundian in inspiration, unmistakably Californian in personality, and never quite chasing the crowd. The Ryan Vineyard, one of Calera’s later Mt. Harlan plantings, often shows a darker, more brooding floral register, and the 2022 captures that beautifully.
There is an immediate aromatic lift here: rose petal, violet and a cool, earthy perfume that feels very much tied to Calera’s limestone-influenced mountain site. With time in the glass, darker spice begins to emerge: star anise, dried herbs and a quiet forest-floor note that gives the wine depth without making it heavy.
The palate is refined and composed, showing a little tannin, but more importantly, finesse. Red fruit sits beneath the floral and savory notes rather than dominating them, creating a wine that feels layered, restrained and quietly persistent. This is not Pinot Noir built on sheer ripeness or flash; it is built on texture, aromatics, tension and nuance.
The 2022 Ryan Vineyard has the structure to evolve, but its elegance is already apparent. A graceful, contemplative expression of Calera and Mt. Harlan, with enough spice, earth and floral detail to reward slow drinking.
