2018 Domaine de L'Enchanroir Le Refuge de Chavannes Saumur

Since the beginning of its history in the 19th Century, l’Enchantoir’s vineyard has been cherished by many vine growers and winemakers. The Chenin Blanc is a dead ringer for Loire whites costing 3 times as much. The winery has worked the vineyard organically since 2010. In the cellar, they follow the same principles—no additives and a minimum of intervention. At harvest, they sort and destem, using natural yeasts and age the two flagship bottlings exclusively in tank. The simple formula of naturally grown and tank aged wine has already led to winning gold medals at the Salon des Vins de Loire in Angers.

Composed of 100% Chenin Blanc, the Le Refuge de Saumur possesses all the elegance and complexity you would expect from a Domaine of this pedigree. In the glass the color is golden straw with wonderful clarity. The aromas are a bit restrained with tropical notes of mango and white stone fruit. On the palate is where the wine reveals itself. The acidity is bright, persistent, and integrated. The finish is slightly chalky which added to the wine’s complexity. This delicious Chenin can be aged up to 5 years where it may gain additional balance. However, I think the wine is perfect in its youth. It can stand on its own or with grilled fish in a lemon butter sauce.
