2018 Fontanafredda La Rosa Barolo
Fontanafredda Winery evolved as the first winery to craft a single vineyard-designated Vigna La Rosa Barolo from Sarralunga D’Alba in 1964. Piedmont native Oscar Farinett is the visionary behind the Fontanafredda label.
Vigna La Rosa is referred to as the “icon” of the Fontanafredda estate. This 12-acre single-vineyard parcel rests at elevations ranging from 800-1,000 feet with a south-west facing exposure. Aromas of purple violets, jasmine and lavender blossoms rise from the glass and immediately invite you within. This Cru Barolo weaves a tapestry of flavors with wild blueberries, creme de cassis, black olives and roasted espresso along with a dusting of milk chocolate shavings. Each of these elements are finely woven into the satiny texture. There are undertones of provencal herbs and savory notes etched into the background that enhance the immediate appeal of this wine. The finish is fresh and long and seems to continue for hours on your palate. While I have tasted many Barolo’s during the course of my career, this ethereal wine surpasses all of them with its depth, finesse and exotic complexity. It now serves as my benchmark in rating all others. While this wine may set your budget back a bit, it is well worth having in your cellar.
