2018 Lyndenhurst by Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon
Traveling from San Diego to Napa Valley in the 1970’s, Jack and Mary Novak were attracted to the Spottswoode Estate, falling in love with the property and the surrounding gardens in St. Helena. In 1972 Jack Novak left his medical practice and moved his young family of five to St. Helena. The Novaks purchased additional acreage and began replanting the vineyards with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. Through the years their list of iconic winemakers have grown. Spottswoode has achieved prominence and notable success staying true to their identity, avoiding stylish trends while garnering praise and high scores. According to Robert Parker Jr. of the Wine Advocate “when the history of Napa’s great vineyards is written, the 40-acre Spottswoode grand cru vineyard will be counted among the finest grand vineyards in the region.” The legacy has been continued by daughters Beth Novak Milliken who serves as President and Lindy Novak, who is the national marketing director.
The name Lyndenhurst is a tribute to the fragrant linden trees that bloom in the gardens. Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted from estate grown grapes along with those from other acclaimed family-owned vineyards. The 2018 bottling stays true to the heritage of the Spottswoode style. This opaque Cabernet Sauvignon (80%) dominant blend is nearly opaque with floral aromas of freshly cut Spring flowers and fragrant rose petals. Embedded into the complex core are ripe black plums, blueberry marmalade, brown spices and lightly roasted espresso. A coating of silky cream caresses the palate as it glides effortlessly to the finish. There is a sense of sophistication to this wine that declares its pedigree.
