2018 Pahlmeyer Red

Former trial lawyer Jason Pahlmeyer and his partner John Caldwell smuggled cuttings from French vineyards across the Canadian border in the early 1980’s. They established their 55-acre property in southeastern Napa, planting their vineyards and recruiting legendary winemaker Randy Dunn. Jayson was intent on pursuing his dream and creating his own “California Mouton.” The first Pahlmeyer Red was released in 1986. It received critical acclaim and 94 points from Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate. In November, 2019 E & J Gallo purchased Pahlmeyer Winery adding it to their luxury portfolio of wines.

This is the 32nd vintage for this renowned proprietary red. This is an exquisite blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11 % Merlot and 1 % Cabernet Franc. The aromatic profile is intense showcasing an exotic potpourri of spices. The framework is concentrated and composed of mixed black fruits of boysenberry, black raspberry and blueberry marmalade. Silky ripe tannins surround an inner core of Dutch chocolate and sweet toasty oak. The finish seems to persist for minutes. This wine is best purchased now and allowed to cellar for 5+ years in order to reach perfection.
