2019 Meyer-Fonne Grand Cru Wineck-Schlossberg Riesling, Alsace

Meyer-Fonné was founded in the late 1800’s and is located in the village of Katzenthal, Alsace which is recognized for its granite soils. Currently, the estate is under the guidance of third-generation winemaker and owner Félix Meyer. It is part of the Kermit Lynch wine merchant portfolio which describes the property as “it’s all about the details at Meyer-Fonné, with an emphasis on tradition and respect for terroir.”

There are only 2.5 acres planted of the grand cru Wineck-Schlossber Riesling. It rests on crumbled granite soils in a south facing vineyard that is organically farmed. This medium yellow wine has a very expressive bouquet of ripe honeysuckle and delicate chalk which draws you further into the wine. Within the richly textured core is an essence of dried apricot, caramelized orange peel, ginger, a hint of minerality and some lanolin that adds to the weight in the background. The middle is playful and delightfully complex with a racy texture that keeps your attention through the finish. A memorable bottling from Meyer-Fonne.
