2019 Planeta Eruzione 1614 DOC

Diego Planeta played an important role in the renaissance of Sicilian viticulture in the 1980’s. He became president of Sicily’s largest co-operative named the Settesoli, which consisted of 200 members. Today, it has grown to over 2,300 members. Diego influenced the members in promoting quality-driven winemaking of indigenous and international grapes, furthering the modernization of Sicilian wines. He expanded the family’s vineyard holdings throughout Sicily, which is now under the guidance of three family members, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta.

The Planeta Eruzione 1614 is composed of 100% Nerello Mascalese. The name recognizes the 1614 eruptions of Mount Etna, which began in 1614. These vines are planted in black lava sands at an elevation of 2,000 feet above sea level. The delicate ruby color opens with somewhat delicate floral aromatics of incense. The wine showcases elegant notes of red currants and cranberries that flow effortlessly across the palate into a fresh, vibrant finish.
