2020 Hermann J Wiemer Vineyard HJW Bio Riesling
Finger Lakes, NY

This vineyard was planted 700 feet above Seneca Lake in 1976 and consists of Hermann’s original vines. The sub-soils are shallow with bedrock adding to the racy acidity in these bottlings. I have been a follower of great German estate wines throughout my career and the Rieslings from Hermann J Wiemer are a mirror image of these stately wines and in some cases transcend them. Petrol aromas and fragrant white lilies greet you at the entry. There are bright pronounced elements of green apples and cool spiced pears within a framework of crushed stones and steeliness, reminiscent of some of the iconic whites from the Saar Valley of Germany. The ending is long and pure. Congrats to winemaker Fred Merwarth and his team for this stellar effort. A modest production of around 185 cases is crafted.
