2020 Melville Sandy’s Block Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir

Melville Vineyards was established in 1996 in the heart of the Santa Rita Hills and has since become one of the most highly regarded estates in California.
The highly unusual east-west (or transverse) mountain range, proximity to the cold Pacific, consistent coastal fog, and steady afternoon breezes together create ideal conditions for growing cold-climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Ron Melville and his sons recognized that these exceptional conditions, combined with their commitment to “winegrowing,” would result in wines of remarkable quality. Under the guidance of Head Winegrower, Chad Melville, Melville’s full-time vineyard crew nurtures their 120 estate acres organically.

Vibrant deep garnet in color, Sandy’s Block is aromatically complex, with multiple layers. Aromas of raspberry, floral tea, pepper, basil, multiple spices, loamy soil with a hint of dried roses leap out of the glass stimulating your senses. I was captivated and could not wait to taste this beauty. I was not disappointed! The palate is medium bodied, supple, and broad based. As the wine aerates, red fruit emerges with flavors of ripe cranberry, bright Bing cherry, and tangerine peel. It is all held together by beautifully refined tannins and a strong backbone of elegant acidity. The wine finishes with length, persistent acidity and fresh minerality.
