2020 Nicolas Catena Zapata, Mendoza

Catena is an Argentine winery based in the Mendoza region of Argentina that has been producing high quality wines with distinction for over a century. Catena produces a range of red and white wines, with a focus on crafting noteworthy Malbec. The vineyards thrive in the high-altitude, arid Uco Valley, where vines are planted in nutrient rich sub-soils.

The Nicolas Catena Zapata is one of the iconic wines from Argentina. I was impressed with the amount of power behind this red blend, yet it still maintains elegance, refinement and a beautiful structure. The 2020 Nicolas Catena Zapata is a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, which is higher than in previous vintages. The remainder of the cuvee rounds out at 21% Malbec and 25% Cabernet Franc, which adds lift and freshness. In the glass the color is a lovely deep garnet hue. The aromas are complex with waves of dark ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, anise, notes of minerality, pencil lead shavings and dark chocolate. The palate is bold and full-bodied showcasing a mélange of rich, concentrated dark fruit. This wine reveals a lovely texture, complemented by refined tannins and lively acidity. The structure is impeccably balanced with a finish that is smooth and sails along, lingering for minutes. This meticulously crafted red blend is one of the best wines from Argentina that I have tasted to date. It will age beautifully for the next 20 years.
