2021 Balletto Sexton Hills Vineyard Chardonnay
Balletto Vineyards is a story of resilience and evolution. Founder and owner, John Balletto entered the family’s vegetable farm business at 17 after the untimely death of his father in 1977. The business had grown into the largest vegetable farm in Northern California by 1994 with 70 different vegetables on 700 plus acres. However, with a multitude of increasing challenges, the Balletto’s saw a better future growing wine grapes in the Russian River Valley. Over a three-year period, they converted all of their vegetable acreage planting primarily Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In 2001, they released their first vintage, reserving 10% of their best fruit for their own label. Today, they farm 16 estate vineyards in the Russian River AVA. The wines are 100% estate grown and bottled. Winemaking is under the astute guidance of Anthony Beckman, vice-president and winemaker.
Sexton Vineyards is situated in the Sebastopol Hills neighborhood with a northern expose and is planted in fine sandy loam and Goldridge soils. The vineyard lies within a windy, cold fog region positioned ten miles from the Pacific Ocean. This Wente clone Chardonnay is barrel fermented and aged for 18 months in French Oak (30% new). Pale yellow with green highlights in appearance, this Chardonnay opens with savory notes of fresh lemon zest and apple blossoms. It has a classic, refined Russian River Valley personality showcasing racy citrus notes of lemon oil, pineapple, white peach and stone fruits along with a hint of salinity in the background. The finish is long and inviting with plenty of lift and mouthwatering freshness.
After recently tasting the 2016 Balletto Sexton Hills Chardonnay, I can attest that these wines age very gracefully and evolve over time. Second characteristics and tropical notes with a silky creaminess emerge with aging adding to complexities and gratification of this wine.
