2021 Early Mountain Petit Manseng, Virginia

Early Mountain currently farms more than 55 acres at Early Mountain and Quaker Run in Central Virginia, Madison County. The Early Mountain estate’s rolling green hills offer a mix of soil types dominated by clay. Early Mountain has recently increased its acreage to grow classic type varietals such as Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. They added new plantings of Petit Manseng, Sauvignon Blanc, Albarino and Tannat, which they believe are particularly suited to the climate and growing conditions in Virginia.

This is a serious white wine from Early Mountain! In the glass the wine displayed pale golden hues with beautiful viscosity. There are aromas of tropical fruit, mango, grapefruit, and a hint of candied citrus and oak. The palate carries slightly more weight. It is balanced, but somewhat off dry with a good amount of acidity that whisks through the palate, creating tension and a delicious mouth-feel. It all leads to a long, dry and balanced finish. The Early Mountain Petit Manseng will age 5+ years, where the acidity will subside and integrate more fully into the wine. This wine was lovely and thoroughly enjoyable.
