2021 Ehlers Estate 1886 Cabernet Sauvignon, St Helena

The Ehlers Estate vineyard is located on an historic winegrowing site in the northern part of Napa Valley’s acclaimed St. Helena appellation. The historic estate and stone winery were established in the late 1800s by Bernard Ehlers and purchased by the Leducq family in 1987, also the founders of the Leducq Foundation for Cardiovascular Research. Grapes have been cultivated on this coveted site since the mid-1800s. The vineyard was replanted using a diversity of clone and rootstock selections under the guidance of renowned enologist Jacques Boissenot in 1995. Today, the Ehlers Estate vineyard, which is the source of exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc, is farmed with strict adherence to organic farming standards. At the helm, Adam Casto leads the Winemaking Team at Ehlers.

Sophisticated, complex and layered is how I would initially describe the 2021 Ehlers 1886 Cabernet Sauvignon. Oh, and one more…sublime! In the glass the color is deep, brooding and opaque. The aromas exhume power, and elegance. Aromas of crushed blackberries, ripe plum, cassis, sweet currant, saddle leather, fresh brewed espresso and a hint of herbs push to the forefront. The palate is big bodied with layered ripe fruit, chewy tannins and beautifully balanced. The structure and complexity will blow your mind, with a finish that goes on forever. The Ehlers “1886” will age and continue to improve for decades in the bottle, it has that much stuffing to it!
