2021 Goosecross Tempranillo, Napa Valley

Goosecross is an estate winery steeped in Napa Valley history. They take inspiration from the land they farm and the fruit they grow. Goosecross proudly take their name from the pair of geese that made the estate their home. Goosecross’s journey has grown and evolved through the years, from farmers and grape growers in the 1970s to winemakers and vintners in the 1980s. From starting as farmers to becoming a wine producer, Christi and Dave Ficeli are living their best lives in the Yountville district of Napa Valley, crafting terroir-driven, expressive wines of quality from their State Lane Vineyards and fruit grown throughout the region. The winery’s history dates back over 40 years. Christi and Dave purchased the historic State Lane property a handful of years ago when they decided to finally settle down from busy careers within the alcohol industry.

The 2021 Goosecross Tempranillo is a respectable representation of Spain’s most popular grape. A blend of 93% Tempranillo with 8% Grenache to help soften the tannins that are characteristic of the Tempranillo varietal. In the glass the color is blackberry with dark garnet edges. Aromas of dark fruit, cassis, anise and a hint of cigar box fill the air. There are flavors of dark fruit, black cherry, plum, dark chocolate, bright acidity and intense tannins that give the palate lift, leading to a very long lingering finish. One of the more memorable Tempranillo I have had from California.
