2021 Hermann J Wiemer Vineyard Reserve Dry Riesling
Finger Lakes, NY

Hermann J. Wiemer is a part of the fabric of the Finger Lakes wine region. In 1973 he bought 140 acres on the west side of Seneca Lake, which he planted with a variety of European vinifera grapevines. Visitors who wish to see these vines, along with ponds and the six-acre nursery, can take the popular Vineyard Walk through the property.

The Riesling Reserve Dry is sourced late in harvest from select blocks in their estate vineyards. Extended hang times in the long, cool autumns around Seneca Lake allow flavors to develop with structure and complexity. The 2021 Dry Riesling Reserve comes in at 12.4% alcohol. 2021 was a difficult vintage, the winery declassified the single-vineyards Magdalena, Josef and the HJW Bio wine and incorporated that juice here and in the standard Dry Riesling and Flowers Day Riesling. The result is a Riesling with a weighty mouthfeel and a rich, balanced texture.  The color is pale gold that crystallizes in the glass. Aromas of ripe stone fruit, white peach, zesty citrus, and floral notes.
The palate is generous, well-structured and has a distinctive character showing layers of ripe fruit, and is deftly balanced. The amount of fresh acidity gives this Riesling lift on the finish that is mouthwatering and utterly delicious. It should hold up well for years of aging and could improve with time.
