2021 Moone Tsai Cor Leonis, Napa Valley
In 2003, Mary Ann and Larry finally decided to launch their Moone Tsai label. Working with close family friends and celebrated winemaker Philippe Melka, they scoured the valley for extraordinary fruit which they knew was foundational to making the limited-production, deeply expressive wines they envisioned. With Howell Mountain beckoning, they launched a collection of small-lot Cabernets and Bordeaux blends, including their hallmark Howell Mountain Hillside Blend. Their equally distinctive Cor Leonis Cabernet Sauvignon shows a depth of character and complexity befitting of such pedigreed vineyard.
2021 Moone Tsai "Cor Leonis" Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards located in the Napa sub-regions of Pritchard Hill, Coombsville and St. Helena, which again shows the great blending talents of Philippe Melka. The name "Cor Leonis" translates to "heart of the lion," and this outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon represents the pinnacle of excellence that Moone Tsai has achieved. With only 300 cases made, it is on allocation only at the winery. The color is a deep ruby, almost opaque. The aromatics are complex, seductive and surprising with each swirl. Aromas of lovely dark fruit, most noteworthy, plum and violets, come to life during the swirl in the glass. The experience continues with forest floor, cedar, baking spices and a hint of vanilla. Amazing complexity. This full-bodied beauty has finesse at every turn. The palate is layered with a creamy core, lively acidity and a finish that is mouthwateringly long. It leaves you with an impression that you’ve just tasted a wine that is memorable and truly special. Drink it now with decanting or hold on for 20-25 years.
