2021 Rutherford Hill Oak Knoll District Merlot

In 1976, while the rest of the world was just beginning to take notice of Napa Valley, the founders of Rutherford Hill recognized a unique opportunity. They believed that the climate and soils of Napa Valley, similar to legendary Pomerol, were well suited to Merlot. They were among the first to pioneer what has become Napa's premier varietal. Rutherford Hill holds a special place in the hearts of the Terlato Family as the first winery they purchased. It was the realization of a dream for the late Tony Terlato.

The Rutherford Hill Oak Knoll District Merlot is made from old vines in the Oak Knoll district of Napa Valley, farmed by the Beckstoffer vineyard crew. The color shows the purity of beautiful dark ruby. There are fragrant aromas of macerated cherry, baking spices, forest floor, fresh brewed espresso, dark chocolate and a hint of dried herbs. The palate is medium bodied, richly textured and finely chiseled. Favors of dark red fruit evolve from the soft mid-palate along with some silky tannins. The lush mouth-feel leads to an elegant and long finish. This is a special Merlot from the Oak Knoll District that should age well for 5+ years in the bottle.
