2022 Calera de Villiers Vineyard Mt Harlan Pinot Noir
The late Josh Jensen became a pioneer in American Pinot Noir. Taking his cue from the great domains of Burgundy, which have grown grapes in limestone soil for centuries, he set out in search of the perfect spot in California to create wines unique to the world, but in the style of the greatest wines of France. Site selection was vital as he ventured off the typical location in California's Central Coast Region to plant on the site of an old lime kiln in the Gabilan Mountains of California's Central Coast.
Calera’s Mt Harlen Vineyards are in the Gavilan Mountains 25 miles east of Monterey Bay. The site was chosen for its limestone soils and ideal climate. At an elevation of 2,000 feet, it is among the highest and coolest vineyard sites in California. A refined and richly layered Pinot Noir, this wine opens with dark ruby color that shows purity in the glass. The aromas entice with each swirl revealing dark cherry, dark chocolate, cherry cola, a touch of cedar, earth and graphite. The palate has a lovely texture: vibrant notes of blackberry and plum are framed by silky tannins, with a hint of spice, just the right amount of acidity adding complexity and depth to the long finish. All the scents, flavors and the finish are cohesive throughout the experience of tasting this wine. The Calera de Villiers Vineyard is a complete Pinot Noir that drinks terrific now but will gain additional balance when aging 5 – 10 years.
