2022 Cathard Vineyard Founding Brothers, Napa Valley
Cathiard Family Estate in St Helena, Napa Valley is one of those awe-inspiring places with an identity that is immediately apparent. Daniel and Florence Cathiard, owners of Chateau Smith Haute Lafitte fame in Bordeaux, completed the purchase of this 200-acre property in 2020. In many ways, the future potential of this property is reminiscent of their grand cru class estate in France’s Pessac-Léognan appellation. The Cathiards are poised to position their wines at the top tier of Napa’s elite. Today the winery produces three red wines, all estate fruit and organically farmed. The ridiculously low yields and minimal intervention in the cellar guarantee a strong sense of place. The focus is directed towards finesse, elegance and drinkability.
The 2022 Cathiard Vineyard Founding Brothers is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and 12% Cabernet Franc. This red blend shows the influence of French winemaking pedigree. The color is deep ruby, almost opaque with purple edges and excellent viscosity. The aromatics are lovely with cassis, ripe plum, violets, licorice, creamy chocolate, and a whiff of sweet pipe tobacco. The palate is medium bodied focusing on its ripe layered fruit. The tannins are polished and silky with a creamy core as the wine sails through the mid-palate. The finish is long with well integrated acidity carrying through to the end. The 2022 Founding Brothers is approachable in its youth after decanting, but should age well for 5–15 years after cellaring. This is a stellar achievement and another definite buy!
