2022 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett, Mosel, Germany

Erni Loosen has many generations of winemaking history in his family, dating back 200 years. In 1988, fate summoned him to carry on the two-century family legacy of producing wine from the picturesque town of Bernkastel, in the Middle Mosel Valley of Germany. Ernie accepted this predetermined destiny and studied enology. He inherited 100 year old ungrafted vines on original rootstocks that were never replaced. The end result was wines born of extraordinary complexity.

This bottling is sourced from the steep, rocky “sundial” vineyard, which has sub-soils of blue slate. This wine reveals a pale yellow color with a bouquet of gardenia and steely slate in the nose. It glistens in the mouth with a wealth of juicy, citrus glazed fruits in the middle along with mandarin orange and white peach rounding out the finely chiseled edges. This wine has an exotic mouth-feel given the concentration of fresh fruits, but the delicate acidity keeps everything in balance.
