2022 Dutton Goldfield Fox Den Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
Dutton-Goldfield Winery's first releases were a Dutton Ranch Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the 1998 vintage. Today Dan and Steve continue to produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Dutton Ranch plantings, numerous vineyard-designated wines, as well as small lots of old vine Zinfandel and hillside Syrah. The Dutton-Goldfield wines are crafted using traditional techniques such as barrel and malolactic fermentation for the Chardonnay, and open top fermentation for the Pinot Noir. The wines reflect this spectacular part of Northern California where the grapes are grown, the superb quality of fruit from perfectly placed and planted vineyards, and the work of an appreciative winemaker.
The eight-acre Fox Den Vineyard is perched on top of Stoetz Ridge, at the western border of Green Valley and immediately above the town of Occidental. Dan and Steve planted the spot together in 2002, and Dan has been crafting the wine since 2004.
In 2022, 434 cases of the Fox Den Pinot Noir were produced. The garnet color is like a jewel in the glass with radiance and viscosity. The aromas are open with a whiff of lilac, baked cherry, baking spices, vanilla, and a hint of coffee bean and tobacco. On the palate it is full bodied and the tannins are round. There is a creamy core with a hint of loam. The finish is on the dry side, but the acidity gives lift and the experience is a rich mouth-feel that doesn’t feel heavy. Truly remarkable winemaking! I would drink this beautiful Pinot Noir with baked salmon or duck breast and roasted potatoes.
