2022 Hermann J Wiemer Vineyard Flower Dry Riesling
Finger Lakes, NY

Hermann Wiemer was born in Bernkastel, Germany into a family with 300 years’ experience in making the distinguished vinifera wines of the Mosel Valley. He arrived in the United States in 1968, already well-versed in the European tradition of fine winemaking. To this heritage he added the skill of grafting fragile vinifera vines onto sturdy American rootstock.

An interesting note during my research on the origins of the HJW Flower Day Riesling is on the biodynamic calendar. There are four kinds of days: root days, flower days, fruit days, and leaf days. Each of these days has certain tasks associated with it; fruit days are meant for harvesting, leaf days for watering, and root days for pruning. On flower days, the vineyard is left alone to rest. The description totally characterizes this wine. The color is a beautiful gold in the glass. Aromas of lavender, citrus- lemon and lime, a hint of ginger and a fresh whiff of minerality. The flavors are fresh, mouthwatering and layered with citrus fruit, an alluring texture and acidity that weaves through the palate leading to a finish that is super long and clean. It is a delicious wine to enjoy while resting on a warm summer day and this Riesling shows why the estate continues to thrive.
