2022 Merry Edwards Georganne Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
Now part of the Louis Roederer portfolio of wines and a certified California sustainable winery, the Merry Edwards brand entered a new chapter after Merry’s retirement in 2019. Merry’s handpicked successor, Winemaker Heidi von der Mehden, and Winery President Nicole Carter have taken up exactly where Merry left off making wines that are treasured by many of Merry Edwards’ fans.
Planted in 2006, this Pinot Noir vineyard from Merry Edwards shows the pedigree in making some of the best Pinot Noirs in Sonoma Valley. The color opens with deep ruby with garnet edges. There are aromas of cherry pie, baking spices, dark plum with nuances of violets, sandalwood and fresh brewed espresso. The palate is more medium bodied than some of the other offerings from Merry Edwards. The flavors are bold, but have the typical Merry Edwards elegance that I have always found appealing in her wines. There are layers of ripe black plum, loam, and a hint of vanilla oak. The finish is a little off-dry, but long and it has a delicious mouthfeel. The Merry Edwards Georganne Pinot Noir is classic Merry Edwards Russian River Pinot Noir. Decant before serving to bring out the aromatics this lovely Pinot Noir has to offer.
