2022 Mt. Brave Merlot, Mt Veeder

Mt. Brave is a tribute to the pioneering spirit of those who settled the rugged terrain of Mt. Veeder during the 1800s and an homage to the Wappo Indians, "the brave ones," who were the original inhabitants of this extraordinary place. Mt. Brave Vineyard, once the Chateau Potelle Vineyard, was established decades ago at elevations ranging from 1,400 to 1,800 feet. While Mt. Veeder is cool, Mt. Brave sits above the fog line, with the morning sun warming the grapes each day. The soil is a sparse, gravelly loam. Nutrients and minerals are scant, resulting in tiny berries with concentrated and complex flavors.

The 2022 Mt Veeder Merlot is a blend of 85% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is deep garnet with purple edges. The wine yields aromas of plum, blackberry, rose petal, Asian spices, and sandalwood which emerge gently from the glass. The flavors show juicy red plums and tart cherries. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with tannins that are chewy and textured. Acidity adds freshness to a generous long spicy and mouthwatering finish.  Delicious and wonderfully approachable. Under the guidance of legendary winemaker Chris Carpenter, he has crafted a wine from Mt Veeder that pays homage to this historic mountain. The constancy in quality from Chris’s hand in winemaking is why every bottle is as good as it gets no matter the vintage.
