2022 Robert Mondavi "The Reserve" Fume´Blanc To Kalon VIneyard, Oakville
In 1966, Robert Mondavi pioneered the crafting of a dry-styled 100% Sauvignon Blanc from his estate vineyards in Oakville, Napa Valley. After being inspired by his early visits to Pouilly-Fume in the Loire Valley, he chose to produce an estate, dry-styled Sauvignon Blanc labeled Fume´ Blanc. He popularized this term for Sauvignon Blanc in the US. Mondavi became known for his iconic Reserve Fume´ Blanc produced from old vine Sauvignon Blanc sourced from the historic To-Kalon Vineyard. Many producers would follow in his footsteps later, choosing to designate their wines as Sauvignon Blanc.
From the grand cru To-Kalon vineyard site, this wine excels at every level becoming the ultimate expression of Sauvignon Blanc from California. Under the guidance of Genevieve Janssens, director of winemaking, 91% of this wine is barrel fermented and blended with the addition of 5% Semillon.
This glimmering pale yellow Sauvignon Blanc is breathtaking, announcing its presence with a complex bouquet of dried flower blossoms and tangerine along with a hint of barrel influence. There is a heavenly backdrop of sub-tropical fruits with white pineapple and poached pears delicately veiled with minerality. Underneath are toasted almonds, thyme and a touch of honey. There is just the right amount of fresh, clean acidity integrated into the framework of this wine leading to a long and compelling finish.
