2022 Wittmann 100 Hills Dry Riesling, Rheinhessen, Germany
Extending south from the Rheingau region to become a valley of gently rolling hills, Rheinhessen is Germany’s largest wine region. The best Rieslings of Rheinhessen are often characterized by smoky, peach and citrus aromas that come from vines grown in the red soils of the Rheinterrasse.
Westhofen’s vineyards lie in a fertile glacial valley of the Rhine. Furthermore, the microclimate of the Rheinhessen region is especially mild ...ideal conditions that enable them to produce brilliant wines utilizing their enthusiasm for ecological, biodynamic cultivation of the soil and gentle, painstaking cellar procedures.
The grapes for this wine come from biologically processed vineyards of Weingut Wittmann and those of surrounding winegrowers in Westhofen. The name of the wine refers to the fertile hills in the south of Rheinhessen, the 'home' of Philipp Wittmann.
This Riesling is a great example of a 'modern classic': elegant with an uplifting freshness. This refreshing German dry Riesling is light straw colored, with aromas of green apple, honeydew melon, sandalwood, wet stone and a whiff of petrol. The flavor is precise with crisp acidity, a medium body and moderately balanced. The finish is tangy, dry, and has a decent length. At 11.5% alcohol, the Wittmann 100 Hills Dry Riesling would be a crowd-pleaser at any summer gathering. It is a great value from Germany.
