2023 Croix Estate Starlings Roost Chardonnay, Russian River Valley

Kirk Venge, founder and winemaker of Croix Estate and Venge Vineyards, is a formidable talent in the Northern California wine scene. He is a third generation Napa Valley winemaker who followed in the steps of his father Nils. Nils Venge was one of the founders and winemaker for Groth Winery in Napa who was the first in the US to receive a 100 point score from Robert Parker Jr’s Wine Advocate for his 1985 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

The name refers to the starling sparrows that annually roost in the ancient oaks found at the crossing of Morelli Lane and a path to the Pacific Ocean. Situated at 800 feet above sea level, this vineyard was founded in the late 1890’s and then purchased by Bill Moore in 1983. Dutton Ranch has since taken over managing this property.

The wine is fermented using 100% native yeasts and aged for 15 months in 50% New French Oak Barrels. The pale gold color just begins to reveal the beauty in this wine. You are welcomed with freshly baked pie crust aromas as the wine unravels with notes of candied lemon peel, star fruits and sweet baking spices. A coating of almond paste and roasted hazelnuts enhance the lavish core along with hints of Marzipan cream that add to the overall complexity of this wine. Everything coalesces in a long and lingering finish. A modest four barrels are produced.
