2023 Cuvaison Chardonnay Kite Tail Chardonnay, Carneros, Napa Valley

Established in 1969, back when Napa had only a few wineries, Cuvaison produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown exclusively on its estate vineyard in the heart of the world-renowned region of Carneros in Napa Valley. Cooled by fog from the San Pablo Bay, the rolling hills of this certified sustainable estate has produced distinctive Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for over 30 years. Cuvaison produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that the estate designated as Small Lots from the Tai Estate Vineyard and small production Mico Lots from Sun Case, Dutton Ranch, Fiddlestix, Laguna, Gaps Crown and UV Vineyards.

The Cuvaison Kite Tail has been a very expressive Chardonnay, and this vintage is no exception. It is unique in several senses, deviating from the traditional style of Napa Valley Chardonnay and delving into a richer style with more elegant mature flavors. All estate grown and 100% Chardonnay, it reveals a beautiful yellow straw color. On the nose the aromas are subtle, with expressions of lemon, honeyed citrus, butterscotch, gardenia and bright minerality. Taking the first sip offers mature flavors of crème brulee, guava, leading to a mineral driven finish that is fresh with notes of salinity, that carries all the way through. I have tasted other vintages of the Kite Tail Vineyard Chardonnay. The 2023 Kite Tail Chardonnay is aged 10 months in 40% new French oak barrels and 4 months in stainless steel. What I found particularly appealing about this vintage is it retains beautiful acidity and a palate experience that brings mature oak-like character without the heaviness. A delightful and delicious Chardonnay by winemaker Steve Rogstad and the team at Cuvaison to enjoy with a meal or on its own.
