2023 Kosta Browne Gap’s Crown Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Kosta Browne has long been one of California’s most recognizable names in Pinot Noir, known for bringing polish, depth and immediate appeal to some of the state’s most compelling cool-climate vineyard sites. Gap’s Crown, perched in the Petaluma Gap, is one of those sites that seems to naturally deliver both intensity and precision. I personally have an affinity with the cooler climate sites in the gap. I think it’s the beautiful acidity and finesse. The wind, fog and coastal influence help shape wines with concentration, but also structure and aromatic tension.

The 2023 Gap’s Crown opens with a deep core of black cherry, framed by subtle toast and a touch of cocoa. There is richness here, but it is controlled, with the cooler-climate character keeping the wine from feeling overly broad. As it develops in the glass, the darker fruit begins to show more nuance, moving from ripe cherry into spice, earth and polished oak tones.

On the palate, the wine has impressive structure. The fruit is generous, but the framework is firm and composed, giving the wine both presence and direction. The cocoa and toast notes add depth without overwhelming the vineyard character, while the acidity keeps the finish lifted and persistent.
This is a polished, complex expression of Gap’s Crown: powerful enough to satisfy those who love Kosta Browne’s signature richness, but shaped by enough cool-climate tension to give it balance and staying power.
