2024 J Rochioli Sauvignon Blanc Old Vine, Russian River Valley, California
In 1912 the Rochioli family immigrated from Italy to Northern California. Study the evolution of Russian River wines and the Rochioli name is often referenced as one of the most iconic pioneers and respected grape growers and wineries in the region. Joe Rochioli Jr. planted some of the first Sauvignon Blanc in Russian River Valley in 1959. In 1969 Windsor Winery bottled the Rochioli Sauvignon Blanc as a distinct varietal and by 1987 Joe Rochioli released the first bottling under their own label. The 10-acre parcel of these vines are still in existence today. Tom Rochioli redesigned their label naming it after his grandfather, Joe Sr. and his father, which became J Rochioli. This name is on their single vineyard designation of Old Vine Sauvignon Blanc. Presently, the winery is under the guidance of Tom Rochioli and his children. Fourth generation Rachel, Tom’s daughter, is the general manager while Tom’s son, Ryan is the assistant winemaker.
The estate Old Vine Sauvignon Blanc is a composition of some of the original plantings of Sauvignon Blanc from 1959 along with other rare clones. This is one of those noteworthy, well-crafted Sauvignon Blanc’s that you rarely get a chance to experience. The medium yellow straw hue welcomes you with a faint perfume of peach blossoms lifted by mineral tension. Interwoven in the wine is citrus oil, spiced ginger, Meyer lemon confit and a layer of marzipan cream. The mineral undertones and delicate acidity add a seamless balance to the overall personality of this wine. The refined pedigree of this Sauvignon Blanc is obvious at every turn.
