2023 Croix 5 Wells Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

Born in 1976 and raised in Rutherford, Napa Valley, Kirk Venge earned his degree in Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis. He purchased the Venge brand and winery in Calistoga, Napa Valley from his family. He then set his roots in Sonoma County with Croix Estate, establishing himself as an astute and acclaimed winemaker in Sonoma, as well as Napa Valley. He is a well-known consulting winemaker for several prominent micro-producers in Napa Valley.

The 5 Wells Vineyard is in the southernmost edge of the Russian River Valley AVA in the sub-region of Sebastopol Hills. The climate is generally cool in this region with temperature swings during the day and fog moving in and out. The 5 Wells Pinot Noir is an excellent example of a high-quality Pinot Noir produced in a cool climate. In the glass, the wine shows purity with a clear ruby color. Aromas are ripe red currants, baking spices, vanilla bean, a hint of dried orange peel, tobacco and licorice. The palate is medium bodied and layered with fruit. The tannins are round with a lovely texture and a touch of minerality that gives way to a balanced and delicious mouth-feel. The finish goes on for minutes. The Croix 5 Wells is a compelling Pinot Noir from beginning to end.
